Nerd Hype

May 29, 2008

The editing on this is a little slap-dash, but I still can’t wait for this. June 24th!

Also, if you’re interested, I’ve updated the Weezer post below with the official video. Good times.

Chris American Life

May 28, 2008

I love Chris Ware, and I was happy to see he’s animating again for the new season of Showtime’s This American Life. I don’t get Showtime, unfortunately, but I love the radio version, and if Ware keeps animating for them, I might have to shell out the 8 bucks a month for it. Here are two of the clips. The first one is so sad and strange and beautiful, it’s a perfect fit for Ware’s style.

Dance Dance Evolution

May 22, 2008

Sorry I’ve been MIA in the last couple days – I’ll try to do better in the future. In the meantime, here’s a pretty awesome video from Gnarls Barkley’s The Odd Couple.

Also, the song that’s been stuck in my head for the last few days – the new Weezer single. It actually sounds a little like old Weezer, which by any measure is great by me. Christian pointed out to me that this single was written under pressure by the label for something accessible and apparently doesn’t represent the rest of the album, but I’m of course interested in hearing it anyway. As long as it’s not a string of Beverly Hillses, I think it will be a step up. There are a couple of easy targets in this video, but I appreciate them anyway. Liam/Kelley and Tay Zonday are pleasant surprises.

Gallery #4: Friends and Loved Ones

May 13, 2008

Last gallery for a while, I promise. An assortment of shots of friends and family. And one of Gary, since I omitted him from Gallery #2. Sorry, Gary.

I really wish I had more good pictures of this city – I’ll get on it and get back to you.

Okay, so mostly Tashi.

Gallery #2: Old New York

May 8, 2008

Here are some shots from New York back in our formative years. We were so young, then – full of hope and joy. And boy was our apartment (if you dare call it that) horrific.

Please be advised: when you click on a picture it will take you to a separate page – if you click on that picture, it will show it at a larger size. Seems kind of excessive, but what can you do?

Gallery #1: The Wonder Years

May 8, 2008

So Ricky mentioned recently that I should put some photos up here – I’ll just post them in waves every few days. This run is a few old photos from the glory days at Whitman. Yeah, I know, most of these are already on the face-books. Newer ones are coming later. Appréciez.

Oh, Chim-Chim. When will you learn?

May 4, 2008

So I caught a preview screening of Speed Racer on Saturday with Genevieve and my friend Dan. Dan despised the film, drawing out the closed-eyes “h” in “hhhhhhhorrible” to effectively illustrate his point.

I actually liked it. It’s a gorgeous movie, and it’s great to see so much effort and talent put into what is unabashedly a kids’ movie. It’s about 20 minutes too long, mostly due to a couple repetitive racing scenes (which I can’t complain too much about) and a few drawn-out sappy dialogue scenes – which aren’t a deal-breaker for me anyway. It’s nice to see that the Wachowskis care enough about their characters to spend a few extra minutes on them, even if dialogue isn’t their strong point.

But from a cinematic perspective, I’d say it left more of an impression on me than Matrix. It’s absolutely amazing visually. They use colors I’m not sure I was aware existed.

And props to them for using a real chimpanzee instead of animating some uncanny-valley monstrosity. Somehow, a chimp in a tuxedo or pajamas just refuses to stop being hilarious.

So, yeah. Watch it. Unless you have little patience for the corny pitfalls of kids’ movies.
